Projects

The dolls were made in Malawi Africa inspired by a quiet orphan girl named Olivia. These dolls were given to orphan children because they had been colonized in their own country. Akin to the 60's in the United States there were no Black dolls sold in stores. This plants the idea that children are not beautiful enough to be admired because of their dark skin. Teaching the children how to construct a doll that looks like them destroys this myth and gives rise to self-esteem. When the first doll was made at Jacaranda the schoolgirl placed the doll on her back and danced around the playground filled with joy.
